What it Means to Dedicate Your child to the Lord
Baby dedication is a voluntary act in which Christian parents or guardians commit their child and themselves to the Lord. It is an outward expression of commitment to teach the child God’s ways and raise them according to God’s Word, trusting God to use the child for His purposes.
In Deuteronomy 6:5–7 the Lord commands, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”
Ephesians 6:4 encourages parents to raise children “in the training and admonition of the Lord.”
Baby dedication is not an infant baptism nor does it take the place of baptism. It is our hope that the child may grow and personally decide one day to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior and choose to take the next step of faith and be water baptized.
