Hurricane Irene information
Hurricane Irene is on its way to the New York City area.
Here is some information on Hurricane Irene:
- Projections have the hurricane making landfall somewhere in the Northeast on Sunday — New Jersey, Long Island and Connecticut are all possibilities — though its winds speeds will have likely slowed by then.
- Hurricane Irene is unusually large — hurricane force winds of at least 74 miles per hour extend 70 miles from its center, and tropical-storm force winds of at least 40 miles per hour extend 255 miles in all directions.
- Even without hurricane-force winds, northeastern states already drenched from a rainy August could see flooding and fallen trees from Irene.
- New York City officials had begun preparations to evacuate residents from low-lying areas of the city if necessary.
- The city’s subway stations and tunnels would likely be flooded in places, and officials plan to shut the system down ahead of time to reduce damage to the infrastructure.
- New York City’s agencies were preparing for a Category 1 hurricane with winds surpassing 74 mph and waters surging dangerously in low-lying areas. With five hospitals and nursing homes in the area, officials were readying to possibly evacuate the most frail and needy.
- Widespread wind damage and power outages are likely throughout the Northeast.
- The bad scenario cuts the hurricane across Long Island and into New England as a large and strong Category 2 storm. This scenario brings tremendous storm surge on the back bays of Long Island and from the ocean. Massive power disruption and tremendous wind damage will result.
- The worst scenario has the hurricane hug the coast all the way to New York City. This would bring tremendous storm surge and wind damage affecting everything from Maryland, right up to the Hudson Valley and across New England. Most computer models suggest a worst-case scenario is the likeliest.

When this storm began near Puerto Rico, I looked at my mom and said ” This will be a repeat of the 1938 storm”. She didn’t believe me. Now that it points to NYC, she is scared and is calling all of her family to get out and none can. I fear this can be worse then anyone expects.
I hope that this does not hit directly at NYC. Coming from a person who went through Hurricane Charley in 2004 at the eye of the storm, I can understand the fear and the dangers. hopefully enough people have common sense to get to high ground from the surge, stay indoors, and buckle down for this thing.

I’m based in NJ/NY area so I’m praying and bracing myself before the storm. It’s a beautiful day out today. Some might say “the calm before the storm”. I wanted to share some helpful websites to visit for hurrican preparation.
http://www.foodsaftey.gov (This site specifically documents which foods can be saved vice discarded post a power outage for health purposes.) http://www.ready.gov (the master site for your personal preparedness planning which has a printable checklist.) http://www.redcross.org (has very specific checklists for hurrican preparedness, and in particular, a master one page checklist for evacaitons and returning to your residence post a hurrican.
Perfect love cast out all fear, remember God is in control. If our God is with us, who can be against us. God Bless All.

I speak as a Pastor and one with experience in weathering this type of natural phenomena. Being from south Louisiana and seeing the devastation of KATRINA, I beg you to GET AWAY from the path of this storm. If you choose to ignore the warnings of Pastor Conlon you are putting your very life in jeopardy. I have seen ships on dry ground over a half mile from the ocean. The wave of water that took them there was 30 feet high !!!Please, heed the warnings and leave the area. LEAVE NOW !!!! We have and will continue to PRAY for you all.

Down here in NC listening to your sermons, sharing them with others, and definitely keeping your congregation in prayer now. Also praying for those who are down and out, that this moves their hearts closer to the Lord.

The Lord is the maker of heaven and earth. He holds the elements by his mighty power and when he wants to show signs and wonders. He will. But we are always called to pray for those who will laugh off these wonders even as in the day of Noah.

May the Lord answer you on the day of your trouble;
May the name of the God of Jacob defend you;
May He send you help from the sanctuary;
And strengthen you out of Zion;
May He remembers all your offerings,
And accept your burnt sacrifice. Selah.
May He grant you according to your heart’s desire,
And fulfill all your purpose.
We will rejoice in your salvation,
And in the name of our God we will set up our banners!
May the LORD fulfill all your petitions.
Now I know the Lord saves His anointed;
He will answer him from His holy heaven
With the saving strength of His right hand.
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses;
But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.
They have bowed down and fallen;
But we have risen and stand upright.
Save, LORD!
May the King answer us when we call.
(Psalm 20)
