Times Square Church has been sending short-term missions teams to work with blind and deaf schools in the cities of Bujumbura and Gitega since 2007. The children come from very poor homes, and are often left at the schools with no financial support. Already underfunded, the schools take on the additional responsibility of caring for the kids so they do not end up on the streets.
The kids often sleep two to three on a single bed. Some of the kids are as young as 3 years old and not yet potty trained, making it very difficult and unsanitary for them to share such small spaces. The beds have bed bugs, and the dorm rooms have an unbearable odor. Most of the children do not have toothbrushes or toothpaste. They use old tattered clothing as towels.
A team from Times Square Church will be returning to Burundi to visit the schools in August. The team would like to bring bed & bath kits to give to each of the children. The kits would allow the children to have their own bed and bedding, as well as their own personal hygiene kit.
