Colombia September 30 – October 10, 2009 |
 |
Trip Cost: $1,500.00 As you fly into Medellin you are struck by the natural beauty of this mountain city and then you step off of the plane and are welcomed by weather that is described as “eternal spring”. Beneath this beautiful veneer lies a history of destruction, corruption and violence. Today, that history is being changed and hope has risen, like a flower blooming willfully through the cracks in pavement. City of Refuge has been an instrument of change over the last fifteen years and one by one has been ministering to the homeless and drug addicted in the streets of this city.
Medellin, Colombia’s second largest city, has a history and a reputation that it is anxiously trying to forget. During the 1980s and 1990s, the city was ruled by the infamous Medellin drug cartel. Drug lords raged war against the government, violence reigned, and Medellin was nick named “murder capital of the world.” Though the 90s saw the waning power of the vicious drug cartel and its war of terror, the process of redeeming the city slowly continues. “Hell Street” is an example of the transition at its slowest. Within its three blocks stretch tragic tableaus of fragile humanity exist. It is here that City of Refuge’s founder Pastor Douglas Calvano found his calling to serve the least of Medellin’s thriving population.
Within the walls of the City of Refuge is a homeless shelter, a feeding program and so much more. The shelter operates a drug rehabilitation program, and ministers to the spiritual needs of the community, with an eye to an even more expansive future. Come alongside Douglas Calvano as God uses City of Refuge to reach the men, women, and children in the very heart of Medellin. Take the gospel to the literal streets as God uses your hands and your voice to feed the poor, and declare salvation to the homeless and the addicted.
