And for the first time in its history, Ireland is seeing a decrease in emigration as Irish citizens take advantage of greater career opportunities at home and enjoy a high standard of living. Immigrants from Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa are also seeking opportunity in Ireland, and the country’s Celtic identity is undergoing a slight cultural facelift. Though the country is strongly Catholic, there is a rising Muslim community, meanwhile four percent of the country describing themselves as having no religion.
It is clear that there are great changes afoot in Ireland. In recognition of this, the government is making steps to ensure that Ireland continues to develop into a culture sensitive country where diversity is appreciated. Ireland is also being reshaped, not by new immigration, but by secularism, which is dominant in most of Europe today. Many in the Christian community are concerned that secular society will eventually push the church into obscurity and irrelevance.
