Trip Cost: $3,200.00The pictures are chilling. Eyes staring out of a sorrowful living mask. Lips parched and cracked. Beautiful deep, dark skin covered in the ash gray of filmy dirt and all the off-scouring of the dregs of lost humanity. Such is the appearance of the typical street kid of Lusaka, Zambia. How can it be that a child so preciously created in the image of God can also be a picture of loss, neglect, abuse, starvation and hopelessness? The streets of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, are full of this kind of paradox.
Since 1981, forty-seven million people worldwide have been infected with HIV. It is estimated that twenty-four million people in Sub-Sahara Africa are living with HIV. It is expected that up to two thirds of this part of the world will be wiped out by AIDS. The tremendous AIDS epidemic in Sub-Sahara Africa has created 1.5 million orphans, with an estimated 700,000 of these children living in the streets. With entire extended families being wiped out by this disease, an increased number of children are forced onto the streets to fend for themselves at ages as young as two years old. On the streets of Lusaka, street kids face every type of abuse imaginable, and even some that are impossible to imagine. Without intervention, these children will be destroyed, by sickness, starvation, and violence.
Times Square Church has a long-term commitment to evangelism, discipleship, humanitarian aid and community development in Lusaka. This includes funding for a home for street children in Lusaka, feeding programs, Bible studies and more. With the initiative taken by Times Square Church, local Zambian churches are now jumping on board and are working together to love and care for these children. But the work doesn’t end there! Return with us to Zambia as we continue to reach out to the street children of Lusaka. Work alongside the local church and missionary families to provide food, shelter, training and the healing power of Christ to these broken children.
