Reaching Into the Darkest Places and Letting Jesus Christ be Jesus Christ

Now Do You Know Who Jesus Christ Is?
At a door-to-door evangelism outreach one team member in the purple team was taken by a local pastor to a dark, small hut in one of the poorest compounds of the city. She felt the oppression of witchcraft and the occult in the place, and began to plead the blood of Jesus. Six prostitutes were brought into the room. Their faces hardened as they sat at her feet. The pastor remarked that he had been ministering to them for a long time but they would not yield their hearts to Christ. They were too hard. The team member thought, “Lord I did not come all the way from New York City not to see these six women get saved!” So she asked them if they knew Jesus. “Yes,” they answered. “Do you know why Jesus Christ came to die for   you?” They were silent. The team leader was quickened by the Holy Spirit and she told them her testimony. When she finished she asked them “Now, do you know who Jesus Christ is?” “Do you want Jesus Christ in your heart?” The six women said “yes,” and she prayed the sinner’s prayer with them. “Then I will sprinkle clean water upon you and you shall be clean: from all your filthiness …and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh and I will give you a heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:25-26

Anderson
An outreach team doing door-to-door evangelism knocked on the door of a house and a man answered who was not wearing a shirt. He went in to put on a shirt and as they waited, an old man came out. The team leader felt the Holy Spirit telling her, “this man is going to get saved today and through him his entire family will be saved.” The old man’s name was Anderson and he had been a policeman. The team leader thought, “This is his day,” when all of a sudden Anderson said “I want Jesus.” The team leader was amazed and began to explain salvation and led him in the sinner’s prayer. Anderson, who had previously been a Muslim, was born again.

A Religion Class that Ends in Relationship
The orange team which has been ministering to youth visited a school in the city. They were led to minister to the teachers as well. At a meeting with the teachers one of the teachers asked the team if they could visit his Religion class. A team member asked him if he had been baptized in the Holy Spirit. He had not. They asked if he desired to and he did. After they had prayed with him he received the Holy Ghost and his whole countenance changed. They went on to visit the class and the team shared messages and testimonies. One team member asked if they wanted to accept Jesus in their heart and 95% of the class raised their hands.

God, When Am I Going to Get Mine?
One of our leaders in charge of security is a police detective in New York City and was invited to share at the Central Police Station in Lusaka. He was excited. This is his fourth trip doing security, and he had always hoped to have the opportunity to get to do what the outreach teams did on the field. He had often prayed, “Lord, when am I going to get mine?” When he was asked to share, he expected to be addressing hard, unsaved guys. What he encountered was Christian policemen raising up a standard for Christ in their workplace. He knew he was there to encourage them and asked if any of them were feeling down. Many raised their hands and he was able to minister to them.

Staying Spirit Led
On the mission field, we have learned that we must be flexible, as we may have a plan but the Holy Spirit can have us go in a totally different direction. Most of our outreach teams have applied this lesson well on this trip. Every day they are sidetracked and re-routed and end up in places they never expected to be that day and it always turns out to be a divine appointment. The red team expected to visit hospitals and minister to patients. Since their arrival on the 23rd they have not gone to a single hospital. God always has other plans for them. Today their day started at a transit home for children where they played and shared the gospel with them and taught them the song “Jesus’ Love is Bubbling Over.” As the day continued they preached to a group of people at the medical clinic and most accepted the Lord, and then they visited a hospice where people are dying of AIDS. This was a place of despair where few people visit, not even church people. In one room there were two ladies dying of AIDS. One of the team members ministered to them with a translator and left, but something kept pulling her back to their room, so she returned. One of the ladies was bent over with her hand around her waist. She was in a lot of pain and could barely speak. The team member heard her say “hot!” so she pulled out a paper fan she had in her purse and fanned her. The woman bowed her head saying, “this is just what I needed,” then looked at the team member and said, “I love you.” the woman who previously did not speak a word of English, began to speak in English. Her countenance was changed and her pain was gone. Another team member walked in and asked “where is the lady that was here before?” She did not recognize her, her countenance was so changed.

A Bumpy Ride
Another team’s bus lost it’s muffler clamp maneuvering around one of the many ditches in the poor compounds where they were ministering, and the bus was forced to stop right where they were. The team descended from the bus and found themselves ministering to a great deal of children gathering around the bus. At a loss for what to do, their multi-gifted co-leader, who is a grandmother, came up with a song they could teach the children. Adults began to come as well and they ministered the gospel to them. By the end, 26 people came to the Lord. As they returned to the bus, they realized the bus driver had not been too happy with them so one team member went over to him and began to ask him if he knew Jesus. He told her he was a Jehovah’s Witness. The team member shared the gospel with him and he accepted the Lord.
